you know… I have been dealing a lot with folks who are “in business” and claim skills in certain areas. Most of them have websites, and portfolio’s and such, yet virtually none of them have business licenses. I find that curious. For me, it seems that if one is to claim a level of integrity and fortitude, and character, wouldn’t the first indication of such claims be in the arena of a willingness to pay taxes?
Ok look, I don’t like the idea of having to pay out my hard earned wages to the government, anymore than anyone else, however I do realize that in order to remain respectable, and acceptable before a government body, one must be willing to be held accountable. They must put their money where their mouth is, and they must be able to at least, risk losing everything they have for the premise of what it is that they are putting themselves into the mainstream to perform, as a talent or service.
If they don’t, then they’re not serious wouldn’t you say?
Because when I work with them, yes, I will indicate on my paperwork to the government that yes, I paid them x number of dollars, for this specific service, and here is the contract with their signature on it, and my corporate signature on it, to indicate that it was a mutual agreement. And yes… the government will come after them for the tax dollars.
That’s how life rolls.
If anyone wants to play in the big leagues, they have to buy the uniforms, get the gear, and follow the rules. That’s life. Everyone knows this… no one is exempt from those rules.
Even in the professional contracting world, we are required to have a business number, a taxation number, and a GST (which is now the HST) number, which we must submit, in order to be traceable.
At least its been this way in the last dozen years I’ve been a senior contractor. It hasn’t changed any that I’m aware of where no longer is it required to be held accountable.
So, in my opinion, if an individual or group of individuals do not have a business licence, business bank accounts and so on, well… they’re not in business. they’re just trying to make a buck and don’t fit into the world of the status quo, and well…. whether or not we like to think of ourselves as fringe and ‘unique’ and ‘independent’ the reality is that it is those within the status quo whom allow us, (or you since I’m part of the status quo), to even begin to function in a capacity beyond that of an employee…
so why not just fit in? Why not just start showing that you’re a member of society, rather than acting contrary and showing the status quo that you’re actually a sociopath in sheep’s clothing?
